MARIETTA, Georgia – The Cobb County Taxpayers Association (CCTA), in coalition with the Georgia Tea Party, the Cobb County Libertarian Party and Americans for Prosperity, are co-sponsoring a “Rock the SPLOST” rally scheduled for Sunday, March 13th from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Glover Square in downtown Marietta. The event is for the purpose of rallying widespread popular opposition to the 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), whose fate will be decided by voters in a specially held election on March 15th. Live music will be provided by “Out of the Blue,” a bluegrass band that has performed locally for several years. Speakers from each organization will be represented.
“This rally represents the culmination of a tremendous grassroots effort to defeat the SPLOST,” said Lance Lamberton, president of CCTA. “It is also an opportunity to thank our supporters for their hard work in fighting to reduce taxes and wasteful government spending.”
Tom Maloy, a member of Georgia Tea Party’s Board of Directors, commented that the November election should have been a wake-up call for all levels of government. “The Tea Party’s demand for less spending and lower taxes applies not just to federal, but to state, county and local government as well. Perhaps Sunday’s anti-SPLOST rally on the Square will help Cobb County’s Commissioners to understand that concept.”
Joel Aaron, Grassroots Coordinator for Americans for Prosperity, said, “The Cobb SPLOST is the wrong tax at the wrong time, especially considering that Cobb citizens have loudly articulated their disagreement with this proposal. The private sector is much better prepared to provide many of the services that the SPLOST would fund.”
